Support and promotion of the “Youth Media Labs” multimedia content development platform

Phase 1: 2019-2020
Tasks:

  • Promote the open media platform for teenagers Youth Medialab yml.com.ua as a tool for creating and downloading multimedia products.
  • Promote learning opportunities on the platform.
  • Equip 20 Ukrainian schools with media laboratories.

Solutions:

Results:

  • 520 schools took part in the project.
  • 400 participants registered on the platform.
  • Teachers and students from 20 schools from 16 regions of Ukraine received equipment for media laboratories and received training on the platform.
  • 4 webinars on content creation for participants were held.
  • The educational Telegram channel and the project page on Facebook have been launched.
  • 12 educational materials and 5 educational videos were published.

Phase 2: 2020-2021

Tasks:

  • Develop multimedia journalism skills among local youth in eastern Ukraine.
  • Generate a stream of new media content about the life of local communities in eastern Ukraine.
  • Stimulate the involvement of young people in promoting positive changes in local communities.

Solutions:

  • Conducting 2 regional contests of video content among youth media.
  • Development and implementation of a training and coaching program for young people on the creation of text and video materials, development of creative ideas, copyright and other important topics in the field of media – 18 online seminars.
  • Development and distribution of a media education manual for young journalists among program participants, online and offline format.
  • Development and publication of 20 videos on the topics of media and civic literacy.

Results:

  • 45 youth media teams from Donetsk and Luhansk regions joined the Youth MediaLab East platform and actively published content (about 200 publications since the beginning of the project).
  • 15 media studios were installed for the winners of the contests. 4 super finalists were given the opportunity to shoot a film under the guidance of professional journalists.
  • 2 media studios were installed in the Donetsk and Luhansk small academies of sciences in Slovyansk and Severodonetsk.
  • More than 200 hours of online training and consultations took place, in which 450 students and teachers from 31 media teams of Donetsk and Luhansk regions took part.
  • 2,000 downloads of the online version of the guide from yml.com.ua and the Facebook page.
  • The mobile application for media literacy “Virno” was developed in partnership with the Institute of Mass Information.
  • 900,000 views of Youth MediaLab – East activities on Facebook, YouTube and Telegram.
  • The student team from the village of Chmyrivka created a video report with the participation of Serhiy Zhadan about his childhood in this village.
  • In the village Neskuchne, the participants came up with the idea of an artistic and modern short film on the theme of limited opportunities for young people in the east of Ukraine. Over time, this idea turned into a separate project implemented with the support of USAID by our NGO.
